Data for 2020, revealed the Block Island Medical Center saw just under 7,000 patients, which is a 4.3% increase over 2019. Dr. Warcup appreciates the efforts of the BI Medical staff and the EMS involved.
There have been 3 additional positive Covid cases in the past 7 days, contained to a family unit. The Department of Health has been notified and contract tracing has begun. Block Island Health Services is not aware of any additional spread beyond the family unit.
BIHS was recently notified that the 2nd allocation of the 70 doses will be released to the Block Island Medical Center the week of January 25th, on schedule. Those who have received their initial vaccination from the BI Medical Center will be notified by their team members regarding their second dose.
The Department of Health recently inquired about members of the community older than 75 years of age. After going through the electronic health records, the Medical Center has requested 470 Moderna vaccines. These vaccines should cover the essential personnel on the island, as well as all the members that are 75 years and older. If there are remaining vaccines, they will be allocated to the next cohort. We want to vaccinate the community as quickly as possible.
No word on how regularly the Medical Center will receive vaccines. However, with recent changes at the state and national level, it looks as though the Medical Center will receive some vaccinations about every three weeks. The Block Island Medical Center will continue to update the community regarding vaccines as more information is available.
